SHOWCASE ARTIST OF THE MONTH: ALEX BUTLER
(Here is a pic of Alex and I. )
Now this month's artist is not one of music, but make up. Meet Alex Butler.... she works at the Mac counter in the Nordstrom I work at. We became very cordial with each other at work and over time I started to call her my cousin, because of our last names... Well we added each other on facebook and I saw some a link to her youtube channel, so I knew I had to interview her for the blog. So here is the interview:
(Be ready to read.. some of her answers are a little lengthy.. LOL. )
Brooke: How long have you been doing make up?
Alex: I’ve been doing makeup for about 3 years now. 2 years professionally.
Brooke: How did you get started?
Alex: I have always been very artistic with drawings and paintings, so makeup came natural to me. One day one of my friends referred to me as the makeup lady, and ever since then I was like… yeah I want to do this for real. I originally wanted to be in fashion design, by makeup won over that. I techinically started with my youtube channel and was getting great responses from subscribers. From youtube I saw other great makeup artists and was able to practice my skill as well.
Brooke: Was make up something you always wanted to do?
Alex: Not necessarily. I was always fascinated with makeup and intrigued with what a great transformation it could be. I would watch makeover shows and focus heavily on the makeup/beauty segment. I went to school for Industrial Engineering and was in the Manufacturing/Industrial field for 3 years. I found out that I did not want to do that for the rest of my life because I was miserable. Mainly because I was not able to be as creative as I wanted to be in the way I wanted to be. So my hubby and I packed everything up and moved to Atlanta in pursuit of my career happiness… we had nothing but Faith (and an understanding Uncle who let us live with him til we figured things out.) I tried Manufacturing out one more time when we first got to Atlanta, and of course it didn’t work out. So I took that as me needing to follow my dreams and haven’t stepped off the path since.
Brooke: Who has inspired you in the make up industry?
Alex: It would have to be my mentor Nettie Kelly. She is a St. Louis makeup artist who has always been there for me. She worked for MAC and I originally found out about her because she did my cousin’s wedding. I got her information and kept it and whenever anyone would ask about a great makeup artist, I would give them her information. Well she did my good friend’s wedding (I was a bridesmaid so she did my makeup as well) and after seeing her at work and seeing how great she was, I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I still keep in contact with her. She is awesome and I admire her so much.
Brooke: What is your favorite type of look?
Alex: I love a bold eye and a nude lip. My favorite thing to do to an eye is to use liquid or cream liner and WING IT OUT!!! Sometimes I just wear winged liner and call it a day.
Brooke: What made you start doing youtube tutorials?
Alex: I was planning for my wedding in Jamaica and I was a part if this forum that was dedicated to Destination Weddings. I was in a thread for Women of Color and the discussion was about “How to wear wedding makeup on the beach.” So I already knew in my mind that I was going to do my makeup (I actually did mine and the entire wedding party) so I shared my ideas. Well someone mentioned to me to make a video of me doing it so they can get a better idea. Well I had already been watching youtube videos, so I thought now is the best time as any to make a youtube makeup video of my own. And that I did… been making them ever since and that was in 2008.
